Milford Track: Sandfly Point to Giant Gate Falls

If you want the Milford Track experience without the multi‑day logistics, this is the sweet spot: an easy, family‑friendly out‑and‑back to Giant Gate Falls through lush temperate rainforest along the Arthur River. It’s big reward for little effort, and you’ll feel squarely in Fiordland’s moody, moss‑draped world from the first steps.

The experience

From Sandfly Point (reached only by a short water taxi), the Great Walk‑grade path meanders under thick beech canopy with ferns and moss everywhere, plus occasional peeks of the Arthur River. Expect a well‑formed surface with some roots, rocks, short stairs, and sections of boardwalk or metal platforms over wet ground. The payoff is Giant Gate Falls, a spectacular ~30 m plunge into a forested pool, often throwing rainbows when the sun breaks through. A swing bridge near the falls gives a classic vantage point.

Stats and pace

Plan on about 3–4 hours return for roughly 3.4 miles/5.5 km total. It’s mostly flat with gentle undulation—easy going for most hikers, including kids. In wet weather, puddles and mud are common, but drainage is generally good.

Weather, seasons, and crowds

This walk works year‑round. Fiordland is famously wet, which actually amps up the drama—after rain, countless ephemeral waterfalls streak the cliffs around Milford Sound. Summer (Dec–Mar) brings mild temps, long daylight, and more people (and sandflies). Shoulder months and winter mean fewer crowds and cooler, potentially slick conditions. For photos, broken cloud after rain is magic at the falls.

Logistics you must get right

There’s no road to Sandfly Point—you must take a water taxi from the Milford Sound side (Deepwater Basin). Boats are frequent, often more so in the afternoon; book and time your return carefully. No permits are needed for this day walk, but you’ll need those water taxi tickets. Facilities are limited: don’t expect toilets or shelter at Giant Gate Falls. Sandfly Point’s namesake insects are relentless—come armed with strong repellent, long sleeves, and minimize stationary time at the shore.

You’re walking a classic glaciated valley—U‑shaped walls and hanging valleys are part of the Milford Sound story. The dense, dripping rainforest (beech, ferns, mosses) is the quintessential Fiordland look. Keep your ears open for birdlife in the forested sections.

Absolutely—short, stunning, and iconic. If your time in Milford Sound is limited, this is the most accessible slice of the Milford Track you can sample in half a day.
