Milford Track: Sandfly Point to Giant Gate Falls

This is a 6.5-mile (10.5 km) out-and-back from Sandfly Point to the Giant Gate Falls viewpoint, usually about 3 to 4 hours return. The track follows the Arthur River through dripping beech forest to a roughly 30 m waterfall and a swing bridge near the falls. It is an easy Great Walk-grade outing, but roots, rocks, stairs, mud, and wet boards make it slower in poor weather.

There is no road to the trailhead. Take a prebooked water taxi from Milford Sound's Deepwater Basin to Sandfly Point, then leave enough time for your booked return boat. The crossing is part of the outing, not a small transfer to improvise at the end. Basic shelter and toilet facilities are available at Giant Gate Shelter, but do not expect shops or supplies on the track.

Fiordland's rain is part of the scenery here: it feeds the falls and brings out the moss, ferns, and temporary cascades on the valley walls. The route is mostly gentle, with only modest undulation, but the surface can be slippery. Sandflies are especially persistent around Sandfly Point, so repellent and covered clothing are worth packing. Dogs are not allowed on this Great Walk.

The swing bridge near Giant Gate Falls gives the most useful stopping point and a strong view toward the water. For photos, include the bridge or river in the foreground so the falls have a sense of scale. After rain, the waterfall and surrounding cliffs are usually at their most dramatic, though the track will also be wetter.
