Tips for visiting Moturau Hut

Book early for October–April; the hut regularly sells out in peak season.
Swim or stretch on the beach, but sit on a mat or grass to dodge sandflies.
Aim for dusk or dawn and walk quietly near marshes toward Rainbow Reach to hear kiwi.
If visiting outside the main season, plan to cook on your own stove and treat water.

For calmer vibes and crimson skies: arrive mid‑afternoon to claim a bunk and settle in for sunset.
Shoulder months just outside peak season offer fewer crowds, but expect simpler facilities and colder nights.
On busy summer weekends and holidays, book well ahead via the Department of Conservation.

Facilities you can count on

A large DOC Great Walk hut with around 40 bunks, mattresses, and a spacious communal area.
In Great Walk season (roughly late Oct–Apr): gas cookers, flush toilets, and cold running water are provided; a ranger is usually on site and often gives helpful evening talks.
Outside the main season: expect simpler facilities (no gas; pit toilets; water from a tank or the lake). Regardless of season, bring your own cookware, food, and rubbish bags to pack everything out.
