Shallow Bay Track

This is a relaxed out-and-back sampler of the Kepler Track from Rainbow Reach to Shallow Bay on Lake Manapouri. Right out of the gate you cross the Waiau River on a photogenic swing bridge, then settle into classic Fiordland beech forest with occasional clearings, wetlands, and short boardwalks. It’s a varied, easy-going walk that ends on a tranquil lake shore that’s made for a long lunch—or a swim in warmer months.

Plan on roughly 12 km/7.5 miles total, about 3–3.5 hours for most walkers, with minimal elevation. The track is well formed (gravel and dirt) with small bridges and boardwalks over boggier bits, and it’s well signposted, so navigation is straightforward even for families and casual hikers.

Scenery-wise you’ll get river views early, then the hush of red and silver beech forest, plus glimpses of distant snowy peaks on clear days. Near the lake, the forest thins and the light opens up—Shallow Bay’s calm water is often clear enough to tempt a dip. This stretch is typically quieter than other headline sections of the Kepler, so it feels peaceful without being remote.

Tips: start early for softer light and quieter track, bring insect repellent (sandflies love the water’s edge), and pack your own food and water—there are no facilities at the bay. Mobile signal can be limited, so download an offline map. No dogs are allowed within the national park here. If you’re tempted to linger, Shallow Bay Hut sits nearby (first-come, fees apply), and Moturau Hut lies farther along the Kepler Track if you’re extending the day.

Film buffs: stretches of forest near Rainbow Reach were used for The Lord of the Rings, which adds a fun layer if you know what you’re looking for.

Best time to hike: it’s walkable year-round. Spring through early autumn usually brings the most settled weather and best mountain views. Winter can be beautifully quiet but expect more mud and higher river levels—check local conditions before you set out.
