Kepler Track: Rainbow Reach to Shallow Bay

This out-and-back sampler follows the Kepler Track from Rainbow Reach into Fiordland beech forest and along the Waiau River valley toward Shallow Bay on Lake Manapouri. Cross the suspension bridge at the Rainbow Reach carpark, then stay on the signed track toward the Moturau Hut and Shallow Bay area. The route is broad and well formed in places, with boardwalks, wetlands, river views, and changing forest along the way.

Allow about 6 km (3.7 miles) one way, or 12 km (7.5 miles) return, and roughly 3–3.5 hours for the outing. The stored line is the single mapped corridor; the listed distance and time describe walking out and back on the same track. The official classification is an intermediate tramping track, even though the route is relatively gentle compared with the alpine sections of the Kepler Track.

Shallow Bay and the Moturau Hut area provide the destination near Lake Manapouri, with a peaceful lakeshore setting and opportunities for birdwatching and photographs. Do not confuse this short section with the full Kepler Track circuit, and do not continue beyond the signed destination unless you have planned for the longer Great Walk route.

Rainbow Reach is about 12 km south of Te Anau by road; follow the signposted gravel road to the carpark. Facilities are limited beyond the start, dogs are not permitted, and Fiordland weather can change quickly. Carry rain protection, allow extra time for wet or slippery boardwalks, and expect limited mobile coverage.
