Kepler Track: Rainbow Reach to Shallow Bay

This mellow slice of the Kepler Track starts at the Rainbow Reach carpark with a photogenic swing bridge over the Waiau River, then settles into classic Fiordland beech forest. The path is wide, well‑formed, and mostly flat, with short boardwalks through wetlands and manuka shrubland. It’s a sampler platter of Fiordland—river, mossy forest, birdsong, and finally lake—without the big climbs the Great Walk is famous for.

Expect roughly 6 km one way (about 3.7 miles) to Shallow Bay, or 12 km/7.5 miles return. Most walkers take around 2 hours each way (about 4 hours return), thanks to the gentle grades and good footing. Wayfinding is easy; you’re on the main Kepler Track the whole time.

Shallow Bay on Lake Manapouri is the payoff: a quiet, shallow‑water beach that’s ideal for a picnic or a swim on warm days. Views open up as you near the lake, and the calm water feels worlds away from the shaded forest approach.

Nature nerd notes: the forest here is largely red and mountain beech, with wetland pockets that are great for birdwatching. The Waiau River valley and Lake Manapouri are glacially carved—an easy place to picture the ice that shaped Fiordland. Keep an eye out for changes in the vegetation as you move from river to bog to lakeshore.

Logistics are simple. Park at the Rainbow Reach carpark (about 12 km south of Te Anau), use the toilets there, then cross the swing bridge to start. There are limited facilities along the track itself. No dogs are allowed.

Best time to go: late spring through early autumn for longer days, milder temps, and—if you’re brave—a swim. Fiordland weather flips fast year‑round, so pack rain layers and expect the boardwalks to be slick after showers. It’s a popular day walk; start early for a quieter bay.
