Te Anau Bird Sanctuary

Overview

Set on the shores of Lake Te Anau, this compact sanctuary is an easy lakeside stroll from the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre. You’re here for native birds—some of the rarest in New Zealand—in a peaceful, lakefront setting. Entry is free (donations keep it running), and the whole visit feels refreshingly simple and close to nature rather than zoo‑like.

What You'll See

• Takhē: the headline act—a large, flightless rarity once thought extinct.
• Kākā: charismatic forest parrots; juveniles are sometimes on site.
• Kākāriki (parakeets), ducks and other natives, plus occasional birds under rehabilitation.

Expect aviaries and open pens woven into parkland with lake views, and plenty of wild visitors flitting through the trees.

How to Visit

• Self‑guided: wander in anytime and take your time; most people spend up to 45 minutes.
• Guided tour: a ranger‑led 10:30 am tour (most days, not Mondays/Tuesdays) adds context and often closer encounters for a small fee. Check at the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre about joining.
• Getting there: follow the signed lakeside path from the Visitor Centre (a short, easy walk) or drive to the sanctuary entrance; on‑site parking is available.

Facilities

You’ll find public toilets, picnic tables, and even a spring water tap. Donation boxes are on site, and you can also donate at the Visitor Centre or online via the Department of Conservation.

Know Before You Go

This is a modest operation focused on conservation first. Some birds may be off‑display for breeding or veterinary reasons—disappointing for sightseers, but the right call for the birds.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon is best for bird activity and softer lake light. Midday can be busier, especially on weekends. Aim to arrive a few minutes before 10:30 am if you want the guided tour.
