Mount Lafayette

The classic circuit climbs Falling Waters to Little Haystack, follows the open Franconia Ridge over Mount Lincoln to Lafayette, then descends by Greenleaf and Old Bridle Path. The new Falling Waters alignment has a spur to Cloudland Falls. Trailhead parking is limited and can fill early; use designated overflow and the hiker shuttle when it is operating, and never park on I-93.

Above treeline, the ridge is rocky and exposed. The summit can be much colder and windier than the trailhead, and clouds can hide the view; snow and ice can arrive outside summer. Check the mountain forecast, carry layers, food, water, navigation and a headlamp, and leave winter conditions to experienced hikers with the right gear. If you want a short or sheltered stop, this is an easy one to skip.

On a clear day, the climb opens into wide views across the White Mountains. Hikers often single out the summit and ridge panoramas as the reward for the steep approach. In cloud or poor visibility the view can disappear, so a promising forecast makes a real difference here.

Mount Lafayette granite porphyry is the hard gray-to-green rock exposed at the summit, with conspicuous quartz and feldspar crystals. The ridge-forming rock body runs for nearly seven miles; the exposed summit lets you see the tough material that helped it stand above the surrounding landscape.

Above about 4,400 feet, small plants such as diapensia, mountain sandwort, alpine blueberries and cranberries, goldenrod and mountain avens grow in fragile tundra. Trampling can take years to heal. Keep to the marked trail and bare rock, even when stepping aside for a photo seems harmless.

The Franconia Ridge trail is part of the Appalachian Trail. The four trails that make up the classic loop were built between 1826 and 1958, so this demanding ridge walk follows a well-established piece of White Mountain hiking history.

On the exposed ridge, keep the rocky crest in the foreground and frame the neighboring peaks beyond it; that gives the panorama a sense of scale. The best view depends on clear conditions, and reaching any summit composition means taking on the full mountain hike.
