Artists Bluff and Bald Mountain

Overview

About Artists Bluff

Why stop

  • A broad Echo Lake and Franconia Notch view for a short hike.

Heads up

  • Steep, rocky footing and foliage-season bottlenecks on the narrow route.
Artists Bluff is a rocky ledge above Echo Lake at the north end of Franconia Notch, reached on foot from the Bald Mountain and Artists Bluff trail loop. The open summit gives you a wide view of the lake, Cannon Mountain and the Notch. It’s a great payoff for a short hike, but the climb is rougher than the distance suggests: roots, large rocks and steep stretches. Go for the view if uneven hiking suits you; if you need a level roadside stop, choose another overlook.

The designated hiker parking is in a large dirt lot across NH 18, also called Profile Road, from Cannon Mountain’s Peabody Base Area. Use that lot; the Echo Lake Beach lot and the roadside are not for hiker parking. The complete loop is about 1.2 miles and also visits Bald Mountain. Even the direct approach climbs over rough, rocky ground, which can be slick when wet. Route rules can change by season, so check the posted directions before setting out. Bring water and a snack; there’s nowhere to buy them on the trail.

From the exposed ledge, you can see Echo Lake below, Cannon Mountain and its ski trails, and the Franconia Notch Parkway threading through the valley. The highway is part of the view, and traffic noise sometimes carries up; that’s the tradeoff for reaching a big panorama so close to the road. For a photo, keep a strip of the pale rock ledge in the foreground and frame the lake and mountains beyond it. That makes the bluff itself part of the scene and shows the scale of the valley.

Foliage season draws plenty of hikers, and the narrow rocky climb and small ledge can bottleneck when it’s busy. Start early if you want a little more room to enjoy the view. On peak-color weekends, don’t assume this will be a quick, quiet stop just because the trail is short.

Artists and tourists came to Franconia Notch in the 1800s, and Profile House hosted painters in hopes their work would bring more visitors to the region. English-born artist Edward Hill, who lived in the White Mountains for decades, painted Franconia Notch, Echo Lake and Profile House in 1887. That history gives the name a fitting backdrop, though no specific event linking the bluff’s name to one artist is documented.

The steep trail has more than a hundred granite curbstones set into sections where erosion made the footing rough. A New Hampshire State Prison work-release crew installed them roughly three decades before 2024 to improve the footing and limit erosion. The stones turn some uneven parts into rough steps.

Franconia Notch is a glacial valley, widened and deepened from an older stream valley into a broad U shape. Coarse pink Conway Granite is common across the region, though the exact rock on Artists Bluff itself hasn’t been separately identified.
