Overview

About Mount Lafayette via Greenleaf Trail

Why go

  • Eagle Pass and Greenleaf Hut break up the summit climb.
  • A continuous route from wooded switchbacks to open alpine terrain.

Heads up

  • Sustained rocky climbing and an exposed finish make this a demanding day.
Mount Lafayette via Greenleaf Trail is a strenuous out-and-back from the Cannon Mountain Tramway access to the summit, passing through Eagle Pass and by Greenleaf Hut. It is about 6.6 miles round trip from the hiker lot, including the short walk to the signed trailhead, with roughly 3,300 feet of climbing. Allow six to seven hours. The route is rocky and uphill for much of the way, and the final stretch leaves the trees. Choose it if you want the summit and the hut in one big day; it is a lot of work for a quick viewpoint. The shorter Eagle Pass walk is about three miles round trip and turns back before the hut and summit.

Before you go

Parking

Use the designated hiker lot at the Cannon Mountain Tramway access, then follow the signed park access to Greenleaf Trail, about 200 yards away. Parking along I-93 is illegal.

Best time to go

Greenleaf Hut is staffed only in season. When it is open, day hikers can buy soup and bread and refill water; outside its service season, plan to carry what you need. The hut is closed through much of the colder part of the year and cannot be counted on as winter emergency shelter.

Safety

The climb is steep and rocky, with wet footing possible at Eagle Pass and the Eagle Lakes outlet. Above treeline the route is exposed to wind, cold, and fast-changing mountain weather; the closed hut is not a winter emergency shelter.

Hiking Mount Lafayette via Greenleaf Trail

Getting onto Greenleaf TrailThe hiker lot is at the Cannon Mountain Tramway access.

The hiker lot is at the Cannon Mountain Tramway access. The trail starts about 200 yards away, reached by the signed park access through the underpass and beside the northbound entrance ramp. Do not park along I-93. Once the trail enters the woods, it runs roughly parallel to the parkway over rocky ground with small rises and dips. A turn brings the sustained climb: a long run of switchbacks that gains height toward Eagle Pass.

Eagle Pass and Greenleaf HutEagle Pass is a narrow cleft between Eagle Cliff and Lafayette’s west shoulder.

Eagle Pass is a narrow cleft between Eagle Cliff and Lafayette’s west shoulder. A broad, slanted granite slab gives you a natural place to stop and look across the notch. Beyond the pass, keep climbing toward Greenleaf Hut. The route crosses the outlet of Eagle Lakes on rocky footing that can be wet during snowmelt. At about 4,220 feet, the hut is a good pause before the hardest part; the Old Bridle Path joins here, but the Lafayette summit is still 1.1 miles farther on.

The last climbFrom the hut, the trail rises onto open alpine ground.

From the hut, the trail rises onto open alpine ground. The tread stays rough, and there is little cover once you are above treeline. Wind, cold, and poor visibility can change the feel of this climb quickly, so carry layers even when it seems mild lower down. The summit is open rock, with wide views over the Pemigewasset Valley and toward Cannon Mountain, the Kinsmans, and the Franconia Ridge. At the hut, the rocky foreground and Lafayette rising behind it make the route’s signature view; at the summit, look west across the valley rather than only at the next peak.
