Overview
This is the park’s signature shortcut to big-mountain scenery. Enclosed tram cars whisk up to 80 people to Cannon’s 4,080‑foot summit in about 8–10 minutes. On clear days you can spot peaks in New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, New York—and even Canada. At the top, you’ll find a 360° observation deck, casual walking paths, restrooms, and the aptly named Café 4080'.
Logistics & Tickets (2025)
- Operating daily May 23–October 26, 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. (last tram up 4:30; last down 5:00).
- Trams typically depart about every 15 minutes; expect to share the cabin.
- Round‑trip only for summer/fall 2025. As posted: Adults (13+) $28, Kids 6–12 $23, ages 5 & under free (still reserve a ticket). Prices can change.
- Buy online before midnight the day prior to save $3 per ticket; reservations often sell out on weekends and are nonrefundable and weather‑permitting.
- Plan 1.5–2 hours for the round‑trip ride plus time on the summit.
- Free parking at the base.
What You’ll See
From the summit complex, wander the short, rocky paths to additional lookouts and the observation deck for wide‑angle views. The ride itself serves up a moving panorama of Franconia Notch, and the summit building offers a warm drink or a quick bite between photo stops.
Best Time to Visit
Weekdays are your friend. The first hour after opening (9–10 a.m.) is usually the calmest, while late morning to mid‑afternoon—especially Saturdays—sees the heaviest crowds. Late‑day slots (after 3 p.m.) tend to ease again, but keep the 4:30 p.m. last‑up and 5:00 p.m. last‑down in mind.
Weather & Practical Tips
It’s almost always windier and colder up top. The waiting area and cabins aren’t heated, so pack a layer even on warm days. Views are weather‑dependent and conditions can change quickly—there are no weather refunds.
Rules & Policies
No pets on the tram. Drones can’t take off or land within New Hampshire State Park boundaries. Carry‑in/carry‑out applies.
A Bit of History
America’s first passenger aerial tramway opened here in 1938. After carrying more than six million riders, it was replaced in 1980 by today’s Tramway II with two 80‑passenger cars. The current season is slated to end with a “Tram Retirement Party” on October 26, 2025.
