Mount Lincoln

Mount Lincoln is a 5,089-foot summit on Franconia Ridge, between Little Haystack and Mount Lafayette in New Hampshire's White Mountains. It looks over Franconia Notch, but there's no quick stop here: you reach the summit on a strenuous mountain hike. I'd choose Lincoln if you want a long, open ridge day and are ready for steep climbing and exposed weather; if clouds are hiding the ridge, save the effort for a clearer day.

The well-known Franconia Ridge Loop links Falling Waters, Franconia Ridge, Greenleaf, and Old Bridle Path. Depending on the trailhead and route variant, published distances run from just over 8 miles to 8.9, with about 4,000 feet of climbing. Plan for a demanding full day. Parking is limited at the Lafayette Place and Old Bridle Path trailheads on opposite sides of I-93, and fills early; never park on the highway shoulder. The Falling Waters approach has a rerouted section near Cloudland Falls, so check the current map before setting out. The full loop can draw up to 1,000 hikers a day in peak season, a loop-wide figure that gives you a sense of how busy this ridge gets.

A common route climbs to Little Haystack, then follows the Franconia Ridge Trail over Lincoln and onward toward Lafayette before descending. The ridge section is roughly two miles of open, high-elevation walking, with broad views across the White Mountains and down into Franconia Notch. It is beautiful, but weather can change quickly up there; treat the exposed traverse as the serious part of the day, not an afterthought.

For a clear view of Lincoln's rocky crest, look back from Little Haystack. The boulders along the ridge make a useful foreground and show the scale of the peak; stay on the established tread rather than stepping onto the fragile alpine plants.

From the ridge, look down at the broad U-shaped valleys around Franconia Notch. They are glacial troughs, carved by glaciers reported to have been roughly half a mile thick before retreating about 12,000 years ago. The scale is easier to read from above: the wide valley floor and steep sides give away the work the ice did.

Franconia Ridge is part of a fragile alpine area. The loop's component trails were built between 1826 and 1958, and heavy use and water erosion once cut an old section of trail into a gully about five feet deep. Stonework, steps, and durable realignments help keep foot traffic on a stable route. The White Mountains hold the eastern United States' third-largest connected area of alpine tundra, so staying on the trail protects a landscape that takes a long time to recover.
