Hiking Hazards Beach Track

What you get for the effortHazards Beach Track is a 7.1-mile (11.

Hazards Beach Track is a 7.1-mile (11.4-km) out-and-back from Wineglass Bay Walking Tracks Car Park to the north end of Hazards Beach. It is the direct way to reach the park’s west-coast beach without crossing the isthmus or taking the larger Wineglass Bay circuit. Allow about 4–5 hours for the return, including a beach stop. The distance counts the same track twice; the mapped line follows it once.

Follow the Hazards signsFrom the road-end car park, follow signs for Hazards Beach through the early junctions.

From the road-end car park, follow signs for Hazards Beach through the early junctions. After about a third of a kilometre, take the right-hand branch to stay on Hazards Beach Track; a left spur climbs to Coles Bay Lookout and is not part of this walk. There are no further route choices before the beach. Turn around at the north end and retrace the same path. Walking south along the sand for roughly 700 metres reaches the Isthmus Track and extends this into a different route.

The approach climbs stone steps to a rocky ledge, where the views open north toward Coles Bay and west over Great Oyster Bay. A grass tree and an interpretive sign are among the small details along the way. Beyond the ledge, the track undulates through brush; the sea is close, but trees hide most of the water. Two small coves come before Hazards Beach, so keep going past the first one.

Make the beach your turnaroundAt about 5.7 kilometres each way, the track reaches the north end of a long, pale sandy beach.

At about 5.7 kilometres each way, the track reaches the north end of a long, pale sandy beach. An island sits offshore with Great Oyster Bay beyond it, and the Hazards rise behind the coast. Take a proper break here before the return. For a photo, include the waterline and the range across the bay so the frame shows this particular coast, not just a patch of sand.

Set off preparedThe car park is at the end of Coles Bay Road and requires a valid Tasmania national-park pass.
