Wineglass Bay

Wineglass Bay is Freycinet's famous white-sand crescent beneath the pink granite Hazards. This is the shoreline framed in the best-known view from above: a long sweep of pale sand and clear water with the granite peaks across the bay. Go down if you want time on the shore; stop at the lookout if the view is enough.

The beach is reached on foot. The walking route climbs over the Hazards to Wineglass Bay Lookout, then drops down to the sand. The published 2.6 km return and 60–90 minutes cover the lookout only. Reaching the beach adds a descent and a steep climb back to the track before you return to the car park. Carry water and sun protection; a Tasmanian parks pass is required to enter Freycinet. The longer Wineglass Bay and Hazards Beach circuit is 11 km and 4–5 hours.

Walk the curve, look back toward the peaks, or swim in the clear water. There is no food stop on the sand, so bring what you want for the time you plan to spend here. Read the beach safety signs before swimming.

The classic overhead picture of the crescent comes from the separate Wineglass Bay Lookout. At beach level, move along the waterline and frame the pink granite Hazards behind the pale sand; that angle gives you a better feel for the bay's scale.

The Hazards are part of the Freycinet Peninsula's eroded granite. Feldspar in the granite gives the rock its pink tone, the contrast that makes the white sand stand out.
