Overview

About Isthmus Track to Hazards Beach

Why go

  • Wineglass Bay, a wetland crossing and Hazards Beach in one walk
  • The north-end turnaround keeps this distinct from the longer circuit

Heads up

  • The long staircase is a steep climb on the return
  • Beach sand and the 10 km round trip take real time
At Hazards Beach, give yourself a little time before turning back. From the north end, the view opens along the long sandy shore toward an offshore island and the Hazards Mountains farther south. Walking farther down the beach adds distance beyond the 10.1 km figure. For a photo, include some of the shoreline with the peaks behind it so the beach’s length reads in the frame.
Parkwolf’s verdictHazards Beach is the payoff

Hiking Isthmus Track to Hazards Beach

A proper half-day, not just a beach strollIsthmus Track to Hazards Beach is a 10.

Isthmus Track to Hazards Beach is a 10.1 km out-and-back from the Wineglass Bay Walking Tracks Car Park. It climbs to Wineglass Bay Lookout, drops to the beach, then crosses the 1.9 km Isthmus Track to Hazards Beach before retracing the same line. Allow about four hours. It’s a good pick if you want both bays, but the lookout staircase makes the return feel longer than the map suggests.

From the car park the path climbs toward the saddle between Mount Mayson and Mount Amos and the Wineglass Bay lookout. The curved white bay sits below; take in the view before going down a long, steep staircase to the sand. Walk along Wineglass Bay to the Isthmus Track entrance, then follow its steps over a sand dune and a boardwalk through marshy ground. Hazards Lagoon lies just south of the crossing. The sand and wetland feel quite different from the granite lookout ridge.

This is an out-and-back to Hazards Beach, not the separate circuit around the west coast on Hazards Beach Track. On the way home, expect to climb the steep staircase you descended from the lookout; the dune steps add another up-and-down. A valid Tasmanian parks pass is required for entry, and pets aren’t allowed in national parks.
