Guide
Historic 1913 Ranger Station is a compact, one-and-a-half-story log cabin on its original site on a wooded hillside at the east end of Upper St. Mary Lake. It’s an easy stop for early Glacier history, but plan on an exterior visit. The only documented ranger-led tour was a special centennial program in 2013, so don’t count on getting inside.
The parking area serves the 3.3-mile Beaver Pond Loop and the Red Eagle Lake trailhead; Red Eagle is 8.1 miles one way. Take a few minutes to see the cabin and separate barn before or after a walk. On its own, this is a short stop rather than a reason to cross the park.
Built in 1913, the cabin was among the first Park Service buildings on Glacier’s east side and served as a ranger’s home and work base. Chance Beebe and his family lived here in 1918–19; his duties included trail work, firefighting, patrols and repairs across the east side. The cabin was restored in 1975 to its 1913–20 appearance. Look for the rounded exterior logs, front gable and lean-to porch. The neighboring barn is separate: it was built for Lubec Ranger Station in 1926 and moved here in 1977.
