About Buandik Campground

Why stop

  • Quiet base for falls and rock-art walks
  • Wildlife is part of the camping experience

Heads up

  • Remote unsealed approach and limited services
Buandik is a remote, creekside base at the foot of the Victoria Range. It earns a place on a western Grampians itinerary if you want quieter camping with a waterfall walk and direct access to two important Aboriginal rock-art shelters.

Before you go

Best time to visit

Early morning is coolest and gives you the best chance of seeing wildlife quietly around camp. Late afternoon brings warmer light through the eucalypts and is the most flattering time for campground photos. Buandik Falls is rainfall-dependent, so wetter periods offer the strongest chance of seeing water, while the creekside ground can be less comfortable after heavy rain.

Getting there

Buandik is 9.5 km east of the Henty Highway on Billywing Road. The approach is unsealed and is described as suitable for two-wheel-drive vehicles, but it is still a remote bush road. Plan to arrive in daylight, allow extra time, and check access conditions before setting out. Reserve ahead rather than assuming a site will be available when you arrive.

The campground sits in open eucalypt woodland beside the creek, with 13 tent sites that have adjacent vehicle parking and four drive-in sites for camper trailers, caravans, and campervans. Each site accommodates up to six people. Sites are unpowered, and the campground has non-flush toilets and picnic tables. There is no verified potable-water supply here, so bring all drinking water.

This is a simple bush camp, not a serviced holiday park. Bring food, cooking gear, lighting, and everything you need for your stay. Keep food secured: kangaroos, kookaburras, and possums may investigate camp after dark or around breakfast.

Walk upstream along Billimina Creek to Buandik (Jadawadjali) Falls, then continue uphill to Billimina Shelter. Nearby Manja Shelter is another Aboriginal rock-art destination. Billimina Shelter was a meeting place for Jadawadjali people and contains more than 2,500 red-ochre bar-stroke motifs. Treat both shelters as cultural places, stay on established routes, and do not touch the rock art.
