Hiking Billimina Walk

The short versionThis is an out-and-back from Buandik Picnic Ground, about 2.

This is an out-and-back from Buandik Picnic Ground, about 2.2 km return and roughly one hour of walking at an easy pace. It sits at Australian Grade 3 (Moderate), so expect a real climb but nothing technical.

From the picnic ground the track heads to Buandik Falls, and the falls side track is included as a walked branch in the route here, so you cover it out and back before continuing. After the falls the walking turns uphill to the Billimina shelter, a massive rock overhang that is the clear high point of the day. You then retrace the whole corridor to the start.

Underfoot it is mostly natural ground, with a metal-grid bridge and a timber bridge with handrails along the way. The tread is well defined and easy to pick out, though you still need to pay attention at the junction where the falls branch leaves and rejoins the main line.

The elevation along the corridor runs from about 240 m up to roughly 330 m, and most of that is gained on the pull up to the shelter. Shoes with grip and a steady pace make the climb straightforward for anyone comfortable with uneven, rising ground.

Billimina is one of the park's most significant and impressive Aboriginal art shelters, with more than 2,500 red-ochre rock-art motifs across the sandstone. Look closely and take your time, and keep your hands off the art and the rock surface itself.

The return repeats the same corridor you walked in on, and the falls branch adds a second short retrace within an already short walk. If you prefer loops, this one will feel like a there-and-back errand with a very good destination attached.
