Duck on a Rock

Overview

A quick, rewarding pullout on Desert View Drive, Duck on a Rock Viewpoint lines up the canyon with a whimsical rock that looks like—yep—a duck on a pedestal. It’s been a favorite photo subject for generations and stays calmer than the shoulder-to-shoulder hubs closer to the village.

What you'll see

• Wide, classic South Rim panoramas and a clear view of the namesake formation, easiest to spot on the left when you’re facing the canyon.
• Vistas toward side canyons like Grapevine Creek, with layered rock colors and big vertical relief that photograph beautifully.

Why it’s unique

The duck-like hoodoo is carved from Kaibab Limestone, the South Rim’s caprock. Differential erosion has softened its “bill” over time, but the silhouette still pops—especially when you use it as a foreground element.

How to visit

This is a simple roadside stop: pull in, step out, and soak it in. There are no facilities here (no water, no toilets), and parking is limited, but turnover is quick because most folks stay only 10–15 minutes. Some visitors continue along informal paths near the rim for different angles; these are unmaintained and can be faint.

Photography

Compose with the duck in the foreground and the canyon as your backdrop for an easy win. Snow adds mood in winter, and low-angle light makes the formation and canyon walls pop.

Best time to visit

• Sunrise: Quiet, flattering light and often few people.
• Midday: Busiest, especially on weekends, and glare can flatten photos.
• Late afternoon in winter: Warm light without the crowds of the most famous overlooks.

Wildlife

Not a wildlife hot spot, but ravens frequently cruise the rim and make cameo appearances at the overlook.

Good to know

Shuttle buses don’t serve this stop; it’s a drive-yourself viewpoint. Pair it with other Desert View Drive overlooks for a great half-day circuit.
