“You're coming up on Bright Angel Lodge, a good stop for architecture as well as the canyon. Step into the Fred Harvey History Room for the ten-foot fireplace built to echo the canyon's rock layers.”

More about Lookout Studio

A stone studio on the rimLookout Studio is a compact, multi-level stone building on the South Rim, just west of El Tovar.

Lookout Studio is a compact, multi-level stone building on the South Rim, just west of El Tovar. Mary Jane Colter designed it in 1914 as a place to view and photograph the canyon. It still combines a gift shop with several canyon-facing terraces. Walk through to the terraces before moving on; the view and the way the building fits the rim are the point.

Take in the terracesThe different levels frame the canyon from slightly different angles.

The different levels frame the canyon from slightly different angles. Low stone walls, irregular parapets and chimneys make the studio feel built into the edge. For a photo of the architecture, include a slice of canyon beyond the stonework so the building’s rim-hugging shape reads clearly. The interior is compact and can feel crowded when several visitors arrive together.

Colter’s stoneworkColter used local stone and an uneven roofline that echoes the surrounding bedrock.

Colter used local stone and an uneven roofline that echoes the surrounding bedrock. The observation room is tucked into the stepped roof, while exposed stone and timber carry the same rugged look inside. It is a small building, but its design makes the canyon edge part of the architecture rather than a backdrop.

A bit of early tourism historyLookout Studio was built for Fred Harvey’s operation along the popular rim route.

Lookout Studio was built for Fred Harvey’s operation along the popular rim route. Its placement helped draw visitors to the shop in competition with the Kolb brothers’ photography business at the separate Kolb Studio, about 100 yards farther along the path. Early visitors also used porch telescopes to watch canyon trails and mule routes; inside, a stone fireplace made the studio a place to warm up as well as look out.

Plan the stopThe studio sits in Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim walking route, just west of El Tovar.
