El Tovar is a historic hotel on the South Rim at Grand Canyon Village, set directly along the canyon edge. It opened in 1905 and remains one of the village's most recognizable buildings. If you're walking the rim anyway, the building is a worthwhile stop; its appeal is location and history as much as a night's stay.
Chicago architect Charles Whittlesey designed El Tovar as a blend of Swiss chalet and Norwegian villa. The hotel combines local limestone with Oregon pine. It was part of the Fred Harvey and Santa Fe Railway tourism network, and became a National Historic Landmark in 1987.
El Tovar has 78 rooms, including 12 suites, and its historic layout means no two rooms are alike. Some guests find the rooms compact or dated, and report noise or high prices. Choose it for the setting and history rather than predictable modern-room comforts.
The property includes a fine-dining room and lounge, along with a gift shop and newsstand. The dining room is a sit-down option rather than a quick café, and in-room dining is part of the hotel's regular service. Check current service availability before planning a meal around it.
From outside, frame the stone base with the dark timber upper floors. A front or three-quarter angle shows the mix of stone, timber and rooflines that gives El Tovar its lodge character; the hanging sign works as a close detail.
