Trailview Overlook

Trailview Overlook is a small viewpoint reached by a short stair descent from the Hermit Road shuttle stop. The payoff is a close, elevated look at Bright Angel Trail’s sinuous switchbacks dropping into the canyon, without hiking below the rim. The historic Village lies along the rim in the same view. On clear days, the far horizon reaches toward the San Francisco Volcanic Field and San Francisco Peaks. For a photo, point down the switchbacks and include hikers for scale if any are visible.

From March 1 through November 30, Hermit Road is closed to private vehicles. The free Red Route serves Trailview, but this is an outbound-only stop toward Hermits Rest, so do not plan to catch the return bus here. The Rim Trail leads 0.7 mile downhill back to the Village. The shuttle has wheelchair ramps; the approach from the stop descends stairs. In December, January and February, there is no shuttle and private vehicles under 22 feet can use Hermit Road.

Bright Angel Trail starts just west of the historic village and drops about 3,000 feet to Havasupai Gardens before continuing into the inner gorge. The green area below is now called Havasupai Gardens; the National Park Service renamed it from Indian Garden on November 10, 2022. The Village buildings visible along the rim retain much of their early-20th-century character.

The Rim Trail section between the transfer station and Trailview climbs a hill formed by the Bright Angel Fault. The National Park Service calls this one of the steepest stretches of the Rim Trail, a geological detail to notice if you walk to the overlook from the Village.
