Expect sweeping canyon vistas with long looks toward the Painted Desert and the broad country carved by Nankoweap Creek. On clear days, the distant layers stack beautifully for photos. In late spring and early summer, wildflowers and prickly pear blooms pop around the rim, adding a splash of color to the scene.

Why Stop Here

Compared to better-known overlooks farther down the road, this one feels unhurried. The shade, the tables, and the view make it a perfect picnic break as you work your way to Roosevelt Point, Walhalla, or Cape Royal.

Practicalities

There are interpretive panels on site, but no services—no toilets, no water, no concessions. Parking is limited and fills quickly during the midday rush. Plan your restroom and water stops at larger viewpoints along the same road.

Wildlife

Driving Cape Royal Road, you’ve got a good chance of seeing mule deer and plenty of birdlife. Keep your eyes peeled on meadow edges and along the forest fringe; wildlife is most active early and late in the day.

• Light: Morning and late afternoon give the most flattering contrast and color; midday can be harsh and hazy.
• Crowds: Weekdays and earlier hours are the calmest; it’s rarely packed, but the tiny lot can still fill.
