Overview

About Komo Point Trail

Why go

  • A remote endpoint with a wide canyon view
  • The old road and faded yellow mapping marker make the approach distinctive

Heads up

  • Long route with rough, faint sections and downed trees
Komo Point Trail is a 10-mile out-and-back from Cape Royal Road to a rugged overlook on the Walhalla Plateau. Allow about four and a half hours; the old road drops gently toward the rim, then climbs back the same way. It suits hikers who can handle rough, hard-to-follow tread. This is a long, remote walk, not a groomed stroll.

“A streak of rain hanging beneath a cloud can disappear before it reaches the canyon floor. That's called virga. Raindrops fall into dry air and evaporate on the way down, leaving wispy trails below the cloud.”

The route follows the former Komo Point Fire Road through woodland and a burned area, where standing dead trees and downed trunks interrupt the track. Tread fades in places. About two-thirds of the way in, the southern branch heads to Ariel Point; keep to the western branch for Komo Point. Download an offline map before setting out, then retrace the same corridor to Cape Royal Road.

At the rimThe route ends on a rocky, rugged canyon rim with layered temples across the inner canyon.

The route ends on a rocky, rugged canyon rim with layered temples across the inner canyon. A large faded yellow ball at Komo Point served as an aerial-mapping reference. Frame it with the canyon beyond for a view that feels very different from a roadside overlook.
