Overview
If you want a scenic base that’s convenient to town but still feels wild, Gros Ventre is the move. It’s set in cottonwood groves along the Gros Ventre River with open views toward the Teton Range, and it’s the closest campground to Jackson—handy for resupply or a quick dinner run. With 300+ sites and several group areas spread across multiple loops, you can usually find something that fits, from sunny, open pads to tucked‑in, shady nooks.
What You’ll See
Expect river corridors, big cottonwoods, and, from parts of the campground, sweeping Teton vistas. Wildlife is a major draw here—moose, bison, and mule deer are regularly spotted, along with plenty of birdlife.
Campsites and Facilities
Every site has a picnic table and fire ring, plus bear boxes to keep camp clean. Restrooms have flush toilets and running water. There are dump stations, but there are no showers. Sites do not have water or sewer hookups, though a limited number offer electricity. RVs up to about 45 feet can be accommodated. Generators are allowed only in Loops A–C. All loops are a short walk to the river, though no sites sit directly on the water. Pets are allowed (leash required).
Reservations and Popularity
This place is popular. All sites are reservable on a rolling 6‑month window, and peak dates go fast. The campground’s size can help when others in the park are full, but don’t bank on last‑minute luck in midsummer.
