Sleeping Indian Turnout is a roadside viewpoint on US 89/26/191, with sweeping views toward both the Teton and Gros Ventre ranges. Its focal point is Sheep Mountain’s long ridge, which gives the mountain its reclining profile. It’s a low-effort pause for the view, separate from the strenuous hikes that climb Sheep Mountain itself. Wheelchair accessibility is listed, though details about the route and surface are limited.

The mountain is easiest to read as a reclining figure from the valley: the long east-facing ridge suggests a body, while steeper limestone cliffs farther south form crossed arms, with a notch suggesting the neck and chin. The shape is subtle from some angles, so give your eyes a moment and use a little phone zoom if it isn’t clear. A frame with the tawny foreground places the ridge in the wider valley; tighter framing brings out the silhouette.

A landslide changed this viewThis scenic stop has a sobering story close at hand.

This scenic stop has a sobering story close at hand. In 1925, a landslide from the north end of Sheep Mountain dammed the Gros Ventre River and created Lower Slide Lake. The natural dam partly failed in 1927; the resulting flood killed six people in Kelly and left water three feet deep in Wilson. The lake and valley are part of the mountain’s story, not just the view from here.
