More about Dornans

A working park inholdingDornans is a family-owned commercial inholding on the east bank of the Snake River in Moose.

Dornans is a family-owned commercial inholding on the east bank of the Snake River in Moose. It is a cluster of useful stops rather than one attraction: you can buy fuel and groceries, eat, browse shops, or stay in a cabin. I’d make room for it when you need a practical stop in the southern park, especially if you can pair it with a meal and a look toward the Tetons.

Eat here for the deck as much as the menuPizza & Pasta Co serves pizza and pasta, including bison Bolognese, along with soups, salads…

Pizza & Pasta Co serves pizza and pasta, including bison Bolognese, along with soups, salads and appetizers such as Moose Bread and spinach-artichoke dip. Its upper deck looks across the Snake River toward the Teton Range, Gros Ventre, Blacktail Butte and Shadow Mountain; the decks are a summer option, and seating is first come. Diners disagree about the food and service, so the setting and convenience are a surer reason to stop than any one dish. The seasonal Chuckwagon adds sourdough pancakes and barbecue in summer.

Fuel, food and a place to stayThe Trading Post carries groceries, deli sandwiches, baked goods, camping supplies and fuel.

The Trading Post carries groceries, deli sandwiches, baked goods, camping supplies and fuel. Dornans also has wine and gift shops, outdoor-equipment rentals, and Spur Ranch cabins. A restroom and Wi-Fi are available. The complex is listed as wheelchair accessible, though the accessible routes between its separate businesses aren’t described in detail.

Evelyn Dornan’s homesteadEvelyn Middleton Dornan filed a homestead claim for just over 20 acres beside the Snake River…

Evelyn Middleton Dornan filed a homestead claim for just over 20 acres beside the Snake River on August 19, 1922, and arrived with her 17-year-old son Jack. A repaired cabin left by a blacksmith gave them their first shelter. They planted a two-acre potato field the next year. In 1924, while a steel bridge was being built between the Dornan and Menor properties, Evelyn opened the Bridge Tea House to feed its workers. She received title after proving up the homestead in 1927.

From ranch to visitor stopJack began three Spur Ranch guest cabins in 1924.

Jack began three Spur Ranch guest cabins in 1924. By the late 1930s he had added a store with gasoline, a lunch counter and a beer parlor; after World War II, growing tourist traffic brought the Chuckwagon, an outdoor restaurant whose cowboy menu was cooked in Dutch ovens over a wood fire. The business kept changing with visitors’ needs, but it still occupies the family’s original inholding, where a homestead became one of the park’s most useful service stops.
