Jackson Lake Dam Overlook is a roadside viewpoint where Jackson Lake is held back before the Snake River continues below. Stop for both sides of the dam: the broad lake and Teton Range upstream, then the river below. It works as a quick look, but the picnic area and boat launch make it worth more time if you’re fishing, eating outdoors or floating. For photos, keep the dam in the lower frame with the Tetons behind it; otherwise the view can read as just another mountain panorama.

A bigger lake by designJackson Lake is a natural lake, about 400 feet deep.

Jackson Lake is a natural lake, about 400 feet deep. A log-crib dam first held back water in 1906 and failed in 1910; the replacement, completed in 1916, raised the lake level by 39 feet. Dredging the downstream channel in 1917 increased storage. The higher water drowned surrounding forest, which Civilian Conservation Corps crews cleared during the Depression. Engineers later drained and reinforced the dam in the 1980s to withstand a magnitude 7.5 earthquake.

The adjacent picnic area has restrooms, picnic tables, accessible parking and a paved path toward riverside exhibits, fishing spots and the boat ramp. The same lot serves people exploring the dam, fishing and launching boats, so leave designated trailer spaces for vehicles towing boats. Bring a picnic if you plan to eat here.

If you’re floating the riverThe launch is the park’s main Snake River put-in.

The launch is the park’s main Snake River put-in. The five-mile stretch to Pacific Creek is the river’s beginner section, but channels shift and the water still takes route-reading skills; scout the landing before setting out. Most watercraft need a park permit, a Wyoming aquatic invasive species decal and an inspection.
