Christian Pond Loop

The 3.5-mile Christian Pond Loop starts by the Jackson Lake Lodge corrals and circles the pond through willow marsh, a low ridge and open sagebrush. Allow about two hours. The park calls it easy and lists 490 feet of gain, though other route profiles put the climb closer to 250–275 feet. Expect a short steeper pitch and rolling ground, not one long climb. This is a good choice for a manageable nature walk; the Teton views come in glimpses rather than from a big summit.

The trail passes under Teton Park Road, then reaches the loop junction about a tenth of a mile from the lot. Turn right toward the pond and follow the marked circuit. At the Oxbow Bend and Emma Matilda junctions, stay with the Christian Pond route unless you want those separate extensions. The area has many informal tracks, so carry a map and watch for signs. The first stretch can also be shared with concession horses. If you want a shorter walk, go to the pond overlook and return instead of doing the full loop.

Willows and marsh edge make the pond section good birding habitat. The path then climbs onto dry, rocky moraine; a small rise gives the best view back across the water toward the mountains. Later, the loop crosses open sagebrush meadows with little shade and occasional Teton views. For a photo, the rise above the pond is the clearest spot to put the water in the foreground with the mountains beyond.

Christian Pond takes its name from Charles A. “Tex” Christian, caretaker of Amoretta Inn, which later became the original Jackson Lake Lodge at Moran.

Use the east side of the Jackson Lake Lodge lot beside the corrals. Parking at the trailhead is limited and facilities are minimal; restrooms and water are available at the nearby lodge. Pets are not allowed. Bears can be active anywhere in the park; park guidance recommends hiking in groups, making noise and carrying bear spray.
