Lunch Tree Hill

Overview

A quick, paved stroll from Jackson Lake Lodge leads up this low knoll for a massive payoff: a sweeping panorama over Willow Flats, Jackson Lake, and the full Teton skyline. The loop is roughly 0.4–0.5 miles round trip with 80–110 feet of gain. It’s short, sweet, and perfect when you want a classic view without committing half a day.

What You’ll See

From the top, the Tetons rise unobstructed across the valley, with Jackson Lake shimmering below and the willow-studded flats spread out like a wildlife map. Along the way, small interpretive signs touch on geology and wildlife, and a plaque at the summit honors John D. Rockefeller Jr., whose picnic here helped shape the park’s protection story.

Wildlife Spotting

Willow Flats is prime habitat. Bring binoculars and glass for elk and moose at first and last light. The marshy network below also supports beavers and plenty of birds—scanning from this elevated perch makes sightings more likely.

Getting There & Logistics

Park at Jackson Lake Lodge and follow the signed path from the northwest lawn. The trail is paved but starts out noticeably steep for a short stretch. There are no facilities on the hill itself—no restrooms, water, or seating—so plan to use the lodge’s amenities before you go. Pets aren’t allowed on the trail.

Tips for the Best Experience

• Pack sun protection; the route and summit are exposed.
• A light layer helps with hilltop breezes, even on warm days.
• Consider a picnic blanket if you want to linger—there are no tables up top.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning or evening delivers the best light on the range and your best odds for wildlife over Willow Flats. Spring through fall is ideal when the path is snow-free; expect more activity around the lodge midday, with the hill often feeling calmer than the viewing deck.
