Trail guide
Death Canyon-Static Peak Divide Junction is a 7.7-mile out-and-back from the historic Death Canyon Trailhead to the patrol cabin. The route follows the Valley Trail to Phelps Lake Overlook, drops toward the lake, then climbs into Death Canyon. Allow about six hours. The cabin at roughly 3.9 miles is the turnaround at the fork; it is not the Divide summit. For a shorter outing, the overlook makes a 1.8-mile round trip.
A short connector joins the Valley Trail, which heads west through pine woods. Two small stream crossings come before sloping meadows; views back toward Jackson Hole and the Gros Ventre Mountains open as the climb steepens. At about 0.9 mile, Phelps Lake Overlook sits around 7,200 feet and gives you the first clear look at the lake. It is a satisfying short hike in its own right if you don't want the full day.
Past the overlook, the path switchbacks down more than 400 feet in about half a mile. The lake and the granite-and-gneiss walls framing Death Canyon come into view. A seasonal waterfall appears around mile 1.6. At roughly 1.7 miles, the trail reaches the low point by Phelps Lake. Take the right-hand branch for Death Canyon; the Valley Trail continues around the lake. This is the turn that makes the hike a much bigger commitment than the overlook walk.
After the junction, the route moves through forest, small meadows and broad rock slides. The sustained ascent begins around mile 2, gaining roughly 1,100 feet over the next 1.6 miles. The tread cuts east across a boulder field, then switchbacks back west. Near mile 2.7, a side canyon joins; soon after, the trail crosses a ledge with a steep drop on the left. A wide alcove streaked with black rock varnish is around mile 3.1.
At about 3.2 miles, the trail reaches Death Canyon Creek. Iron-colored water pours between the rocks, and the cascades get louder farther upstream. After more switchbacks, the grade eases around mile 3.6 into small pools and open meadows. Gaps in the trees look toward the craggy Alaska Basin peaks to the north and Prospectors Mountain to the south.
The patrol cabin sits at the junction around 3.9 miles in. From here, the route branches toward Static Peak Divide or farther into Death Canyon toward Fox Creek Pass. The payoff is the canyon walk and its water, not a summit at the end. Return the way you came. The steep climb back to Phelps Lake Overlook is the part that often makes the last miles feel longer.
