Inspiration Point Trail

Overview

This is the classic Jenny Lake outing: a lakeside stroll, a legit waterfall, and a sweeping overlook—without burning your whole day. From the Jenny Lake Visitor Center, it’s about 5.7 miles total (out-and-back). If you ride the shuttle boat to the west shore, you’ll cut it to roughly 1.8 miles round trip. Expect about 420–450 feet of climbing from the lake up to Inspiration Point, with total elevation gain reaching ~870 feet if you walk the full shoreline instead of boating.

What You’ll See

Walking from the visitor center traces Jenny Lake’s edge with frequent water-and-peak vantages before you turn inland toward Hidden Falls—a crowd-pleasing, roughly 100‑foot cascade tucked in conifers. Beyond the falls, a short series of rocky switchbacks (about 200 feet of gain) pops you onto Inspiration Point, around 7,200 feet. The payoff is big: Jenny Lake and the Jackson Hole valley spread below, with the Tetons at your back and long views toward the Yellowstone Plateau, Absaroka, Gros Ventre, and Snake River ranges. You’re standing at the mouth of Cascade Canyon, a textbook U-shaped glacial valley, above a deep, glacially carved lake.

Trail Character & Difficulty

Overall this is easy to moderate. The shoreline is mostly flat and smooth, but the final climb is steeper, rockier, and has a few narrow spots with drop-offs. It’s well maintained, just rougher underfoot above the falls. Families do this all the time, but keep a close hand on kids—there are no railings up high and the exposure is real.

Best Time to Hike

Late spring through early fall is prime. The approach to Hidden Falls is typically snow-free by mid-May; lingering snow on the switchbacks to Inspiration Point can hang on into early June. Shoot for an early start (by about 8:30 a.m.) to beat the crowds and snag parking. The overlook faces east, so sunrise light is gorgeous for photography; late afternoon can be glary across the lake.

Tips & Tricks

• Parking at Jenny Lake Visitor Center fills by mid-morning—arrive early.
• The boat shuttle (for a fee) is a smart shortcut if you’re short on time or hiking with kids.
• Bring water, sun protection, and sturdy shoes; the upper stretch is exposed and rocky.
• If you’re energized at the top, continue into Cascade Canyon for quieter, bigger-mountain scenery once you’ve left the crowds behind.

Is It Worth It?

Yes. This is one of the park’s best effort-to-reward hikes: an approachable climb with classic Teton views, a real waterfall, and flexible distance thanks to the shuttle option. It’s popular and can feel busy near the falls—start early or keep hiking beyond Inspiration Point if you want a more serene experience.
