Split Point Lighthouse

Inside, four landings break up the stair climb, but there’s no lift. The operator recommends moderate fitness, and children need to climb independently. Wind and weather can limit or close tower access, so check tour availability if climbing is the main reason for stopping. Visitors repeatedly praise the outdoor coastal outlooks too, so there’s still a worthwhile stop when you skip the stairs.

The station opened with three keepers in 1891, one of four Victorian lights built in the late 19th century after inter-colonial navigation planning. Its stone came from nearby Lookout Hill, while the lantern equipment came from Chance Bros. in England. A 1997 heritage survey recorded the original cast-iron pedestal and lantern still in place. The station was automated in 1919 and the light still guides vessels across Bass Strait.

Below the headland, 20-metre Eagle Rock rises from the marine sanctuary, capped with limestone; nearby Table Rock has been flattened by wave action. The beach and sea cave below add a different angle on the coast, but access depends on conditions. This is an exposed shoreline with strong currents and large, unexpected waves, so don’t force a beach visit when the sea is rough.

For the classic shot, step back along the grounds until the full white tower clears the coastal scrub. From the balcony, turn away from the lighthouse for the wider sweep of coast; dolphins or whales sometimes pass within view, though a sighting is never guaranteed.
