Parking

Start at the Princetown end of the Gellibrand River wetlands boardwalk off Old Coach Road, near 93 Old Coach Road. The route finishes at the Twelve Apostles precinct, so arrange a car shuffle or return transfer before setting off. Dedicated parking capacity and fees at the start were not verified.

Safety

Soft sand and steep sandy steps make the coast section slower underfoot. The separate Gibson Steps beach descent depends on tide and swell and can close; the clifftop lookout remains the route stop. Dogs are prohibited in Port Campbell National Park.

Hiking Great Ocean Walk: Princetown to Twelve Apostles

The final stage to the ApostlesPrincetown to the Twelve Apostles is the last 7.

Princetown to the Twelve Apostles is the last 7.6 km of the Great Ocean Walk, a point-to-point coastal day walk from the Princetown end of the Gellibrand River wetlands boardwalk to the Twelve Apostles precinct. It gains about 179 m in total and takes around 2.5 hours with stops. Choose it if you want to arrive at the famous limestone coast on foot: the walk shifts from a wetland crossing to sandy coastal track and finishes at the Apostles lookouts. It's one-way, so settle your return transfer before you start.

Cross the wetlands firstBegin at the Princetown side of the river-mouth wetland and follow the bridge and boardwalk…

Begin at the Princetown side of the river-mouth wetland and follow the bridge and boardwalk west to the Great Ocean Walk. This connector is part of the walk, not a separate trip to a boardwalk. It's a quiet-feeling opening before the more open coastal sections, and it makes the change in landscape part of the route rather than an afterthought. As you leave the wetland, keep heading west toward the coast; this route doesn't loop back through Princetown.

Sand and coastal trackAfter the wetland, the route follows the coast through scrub and dune country.

After the wetland, the route follows the coast through scrub and dune country. Expect soft sand, steep sandy steps on some slopes and occasional boardwalk. The footing changes, so the distance takes longer than a firm gravel path. There isn't one long climb; the effort comes from the repeated rises and loose sand. Ocean views come and go as the path moves between vegetated stretches and more open coastal ground. Allow extra time for the sand and for the viewpoints at the end.

Stop at Gibson StepsThe Great Ocean Walk passes Gibson Steps near the end and crosses under the Great Ocean Road…

The Great Ocean Walk passes Gibson Steps near the end and crosses under the Great Ocean Road before the visitor precinct. Pause at the lookout above the beach. Going down is a separate beach detour: the steps are steep, and access depends on tide and sea conditions, so check the closure signs and don't make the beach part of a tight schedule. The two offshore stacks visible here are Gog and Magog, not part of the Twelve Apostles. Settler Hugh Gibson cut the steps into the cliff along access used earlier by Traditional Owners.

Finish at the ApostlesThe route ends at the Twelve Apostles precinct, where the limestone stacks rise straight from…

The route ends at the Twelve Apostles precinct, where the limestone stacks rise straight from the Southern Ocean. Seven remain; six make the familiar main grouping and the seventh stands just beyond the main viewing platform. Waves and rain keep wearing at the softer limestone, and one stack collapsed in 2005. For a photo, keep some surf and cliff in frame with the stacks; a close crop loses the scale of the coast you have just walked.
