“Johanna Beach is coming up, a broad sweep of sand beneath green hills with long lines of surf rolling in. Stop for a shore walk or a picnic, rather than a swim: the exposed breaks are powerful and hazardous.”

Johanna Beach Campground is a drive-in, unpowered camp in Great Otway National Park, set in open grassy clearings behind Johanna Beach. Its 25 sites take up to six people each. Stay for a grassy coastal base near the beach or as a base for walking the Great Ocean Walk, rather than for powered-site comforts. Book through Parks Victoria before you arrive.

Facilities are basic: non-flush toilets, including an accessible toilet, and untreated water. Bring potable drinking water, food and camping supplies. The sites are open grassy plots rather than enclosed, private bays, and some pitches feel close to neighboring campers. Wind and rain can reach this open coastal setting, so pack for changeable weather.

The beach's surfing storyJohanna Beach has a place in Australian surf history.

Johanna Beach has a place in Australian surf history. In May 1970 the World Surfing Titles moved here after Bells Beach went flat. That story belongs to the beach itself, but it adds a little context to a stay beside this stretch of coast.
