Parking

The walking start is the signed Milanesia Beach Access Gate at the foot of Hiders Access Road. Parking is limited near the access points, but public parking at the gate and vehicle access to the approach were not confirmed. Check the legal approach before driving and do not use private driveways.

Safety

The return climb from the beach is steep. Surf and the creek/beach crossing on the longer coastal route can be unsafe outside normal tides and calm weather; turn back if conditions are rough. Dogs are not permitted in this national-park area.

Why a Fantail Follows You
0:00 / 0:28
“If a little grey bird follows you along a forest path, it may be after the insects your footsteps disturb. Grey fantails often do this, darting out to catch prey in mid-air.”

Hiking Milanesia Beach Walk

A short return to a real beachThis is a 2.5-mile out-and-back from Milanesia Beach Access Gate to Milanesia Beach.

This is a 2.5-mile out-and-back from Milanesia Beach Access Gate to Milanesia Beach. A marker at the gate gives 1.7 km and 30 minutes to the sand; the connected track and path measure closer to 2 km each way, so treat the mileage as an estimate. Allow about 1½ hours for the walk, then add time on the shore. Go for the remote sand, surf and pale cliffs, not an easy seaside stroll. The westbound Great Ocean Walk to Moonlight Head is a separate five-hour, one-way outing that needs a pickup.

From the gate, the route follows unpaved Melanesia Track before a walking path drops to the coast. You start well above sea level; the return climb is steep and tiring. It’s a short route, but the uphill leg is the work, so leave enough time to get back out.

Let the shoreline set the limitSurf and the unbridged creek along the longer coastal route can make passage unsafe.

Surf and the unbridged creek along the longer coastal route can make passage unsafe. The low beach section is generally passable only in normal tides and calm weather; don’t press on when the water is rough. You can finish this beach return at the shore without continuing west. From the public sand, the pale cliff line behind the breaking surf makes the strongest photo.

Find the right gateThe walking start is the Milanesia Beach Access Gate at the foot of Hiders Access Road.

The walking start is the Milanesia Beach Access Gate at the foot of Hiders Access Road. Directions can be confusing, and public parking or vehicle access at the gate isn’t confirmed, so sort out the legal approach before driving and stay off private driveways. There are no formal facilities at the beach. Dogs aren’t permitted in this part of Great Otway National Park.
