Castle Creek Picnic Area

Castle Creek Picnic Area is a day-use stop on Medano Pass Primitive Road, on the eastern side of the dunefield. Picnic tables sit among cottonwoods at the foot of a steep dune face beside the Medano Creek corridor. Keep it in mind for a meal and a look at this eastern corner of the park; the approach is part of the outing, not a quick detour from the main day-use area.

To drive directly to Castle Creek, you need a high-clearance 4WD vehicle with a 4L low-range transfer case beyond Point of No Return. With a 2WD vehicle, park there and walk about 1.5 miles each way. The primitive road usually fully opens in mid-to-late May and stays open until near the end of November, weather permitting. There is no cell signal along the road, so check conditions before setting out.

The tall dune face is the landmark here. Its steep slopes end abruptly on firm, wet sand beside Medano Creek; unlike the main dunes, this area is not safe for sand sledding. Walk down to the creek edge and look back at how quickly the sand rises. When water is flowing, including the creek or wet-sand edge in a photo shows that sudden meeting. Flow changes with the season and snowpack, so the water may look very different on another visit.

The stop has picnic tables and a vault toilet. Bring your own food and drinking water; no site-specific food service or potable-water source was verified. Park only in designated areas.
