Sand Pit Picnic Area

Sand Pit is a small picnic area on the Medano Pass Primitive Road, beside seasonal Medano Creek at the eastern edge of the dunefield. It gives you access to the creek, sand and a view toward the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. I’d stop here if you already have the right vehicle and want a picnic near the water; for a simple look at the dunes, the main Dunes Parking Area is much easier to reach.

Sand Pit is 1.8 miles from the start of Medano Pass Primitive Road. The Point of No Return comes first, at mile 1.1; beyond it, a high-clearance 4WD vehicle with low range is required. AWD and 2WD vehicles aren’t allowed, and NPS warns of deep sand at Sand Pit. Conditions change, so check the park’s road update before you go. There’s no cell signal along the road.

Medano Creek’s surge flow is seasonal, usually strongest in late May or early June in an average year, but snowpack and weather can shift the timing. Sand Pit sits upstream of the main dunes access, so water may recede here earlier. When the creek is flowing, you can wade before walking across the sand; the dunefield has no established trails, and the route is your choice. Expect little shade at this open stop.
