Sand Creek Trail

Sand Creek Trail follows the drainage upstream for about 10 miles one way to Lower Sand Creek Lake. The climb gains roughly 3,500 feet by the park estimate, and the lake sits above 11,000 feet. Allow about 9 hours for this leg; that is a planning estimate, since the official directions give distance and gain but no time. The mapped route ends at Lower Lake. Upper Sand Creek Lake is another destination in the basin, but that extension is not drawn here. Returning along the same drainage makes this section about 20 miles.

There is no drive-up trailhead at the route start. From Liberty Gate Trailhead on the west side, it is about 7 miles to lower Sand Creek, then another 10 miles up to the lakes. That is roughly 17 miles one way from the car and 34 miles for the return trip, so plan this as a backpacking outing. The eastern approach adds about 11 miles from Point of No Return on Sand Ramp Trail, or 7 miles from the Sand Ramp Trailhead on Medano Pass Primitive Road, which requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle. The Sand Ramp route is sandy and grueling. Leashed pets are allowed in the Preserve and along Liberty Road; they are not allowed on Sand Ramp Trail north of Point of No Return, so use the west approach if hiking with a pet.

Lower Sand Creek Lake is marked at 11,473 feet on the park map, with Upper Sand Creek Lake at 11,745 feet. The alpine basin is the payoff after the long creek climb: conifer slopes rise toward steep gray peaks, and snow often remains in high pockets into summer. This line follows the route to Lower Lake; it is a generalized drainage corridor rather than a surveyed tread trace, so use it for orientation and confirm the route on an official map before setting out.
