Cataloochee Valley Overlook is a roadside viewpoint near the handoff from Cove Creek Road to paved Cataloochee Entrance Road. A split-rail fence edges the turnout, with a broad view over forested slopes and the ridges around Cataloochee Valley. Stop if you’re already making the drive in; this is a preview, while the valley’s historic places and elk habitat lie farther along.

The approach via Cove Creek Road is narrow, winding and gravel, with steep drop-offs and no guardrails. Passing can be tight enough that you may need to stop or back up for oncoming traffic. The overlook is right at the road, so there’s no hike to reach it. Cataloochee Road is listed as a year-round route, but snow, ice and other hazardous weather can close it; check road conditions before setting out. Vehicles parked more than 15 minutes inside the park need a physical parking tag.

Use the split-rail fence along the bottom of your photo and keep several ridgelines behind it. The fence gives the broad green view some depth and makes the panorama read as a valley rather than a single forested slope.

The valley is home to one of the park’s two main elk herds and preserves a rich cultural history. This pullout gives you the lay of the land; continue farther in for the historic area and wildlife habitat, and treat an elk sighting as a possibility rather than a promise.
