More about Will Messer Barn

A quick Cataloochee stopWill Messer Barn is a restored early-1900s farm barn beside Cataloochee Ranger Station.

Will Messer Barn is a restored early-1900s farm barn beside Cataloochee Ranger Station. It makes a worthwhile short stop while exploring the valley, but the building was moved here; this is not the farm site where Will Messer built it.

The barn's first homeMesser built the barn on his farm in Little Cataloochee between 1900 and 1905.

Messer built the barn on his farm in Little Cataloochee between 1900 and 1905. In 1977 it was moved beside the ranger station after the original farm area had become overgrown. The Little Cataloochee Trail passes the old farm site, so keep the two locations straight if you are planning a hike there.

Messer ran apple orchards, a store and the local post office, as well as a sawmill and gristmill. Little Cataloochee grew from 391 people in 1880 to 1,251 in 1910; Messer and his family left for Caldwell County in 1934. That history gives this small stop a connection to a working community, not just an old building.

Look at the constructionNotice the weathered timber walls, shingled roof, stone footing and open lower bay.

Notice the weathered timber walls, shingled roof, stone footing and open lower bay. For a photo, keep the open bay and roofline together; a view around the end brings out the broad plank door and stonework.
