“Jarvis Palmer House is coming up, the yellow home with a white kitchen wing. Beneath the siding are two log cabins built around eighteen sixty, sharing one roof with an open passage between them.”

Jarvis Palmer House is a preserved home, barn and exhibit stop in Big Cataloochee, one of the Smokies’ old mountain settlements. The yellow main house and white kitchen wing make the history visible from the yard, with the barn adding more to see than a roadside facade. Go if you like domestic history; this is a short visit, not a major attraction. Allow around half an hour if the house and barn are open. Interior access is seasonal, so check before making it the reason for the drive. The wider valley is one of the park’s main elk areas, though sightings aren’t guaranteed at the house.

The house began around 1860 as a dog-trot home built by George Lafayette Palmer: two log cabins beneath one roof, divided by an open passage. Between 1900 and 1905, George and his son Jarvis added weatherboarding and interior paneling over the old log structure. After George died in 1910, Jarvis inherited the property and added a two-room kitchen and dining wing in 1924; that addition now holds exhibits.

When the house is open, look for newspaper used as insulation on the upstairs walls and remnants of wallpaper in the downstairs rooms and ceilings. Some newspaper was pasted sideways or upside down, and parts can still be read. One room later served as the community post office. Jarvis also built two bunkhouses for visitors who came to fish, a reminder that Cataloochee was a lived-in valley before it became park land. For a photo, step back far enough to frame the yellow house and white wing together; the barn-side view also shows how the house sits in its grassy clearing.

Make the drive part of the planThe approach is a narrow, winding gravel road with steep, unguarded drop-offs.

The approach is a narrow, winding gravel road with steep, unguarded drop-offs. Passing oncoming traffic may mean stopping or backing up, and horse trailers use the road too. The suggested route from I-40 via Cove Creek Road is about 11 miles, including roughly 15 minutes on gravel, so leave time for a slow drive. A park parking tag is required if you park longer than 15 minutes. A public restroom is reported across the road, with picnic tables on the grounds; food service and potable water at this stop weren’t established, so bring what you need.
