Trail guide
Palmer Creek Trail is a backcountry out-and-back from Pretty Hollow Gap Trailhead to Balsam Mountain Road. The walk starts with about 1.2 miles on Pretty Hollow Gap Trail to Indian Flats, then follows the named trail for about 3.25 miles to the road. The checked map line works out to about 9 miles round trip; other published descriptions put it closer to 9.5–9.8 miles, so plan for the longer figure. Allow around six hours. The grade is moderate for much of the way, but the upper climb is steeper.
The approach begins on a broad, rocky old roadbed, passes a horse camp and the Little Cataloochee junction, then reaches Indian Flats at the meeting of Pretty Hollow and Palmer creeks. Turn left here onto Palmer Creek Trail. It is easy to continue on the wrong named route if you miss this junction, so keep the trail map handy.
The path narrows to single track and climbs above Palmer Creek. Lost Bottom Creek is about 1.1 miles into this segment; Beech Creek is roughly another half-mile on. Several crossings involve uneven creek rock, and high water can make them unsafe. If you want a shorter day, Beech Creek is a sensible turnaround, about six miles round trip from the parking area. Carry food and drinking water for a long backcountry walk; no services were confirmed along the route.
At Lost Bottom Creek, sandstone forms straight ledges and angled shelves across the stream instead of rounded boulders. Indian Flats was settled by the Palmer family in the late 19th century, and the approach passes the site of an old homesite. The creek crossings and the clearing give this walk more character than a simple climb through forest.
Above Beech Creek, the grade steepens on Trail Ridge. Near the top, rhododendron closes around a short stretch before the path levels onto an old rail grade. Look south through the trees toward Spruce Mountain. The trail ends beside a fenced flood-warning station on Balsam Mountain Road, not at a summit; turn around and retrace the route. The road is a seasonal, one-way vehicle route, so treat it as the hike's turnaround rather than a pickup point.
