Grotto Falls Trail

A short access path from the parking area joins Trillium Gap Trail after roughly 0.15 mile; that connector is part of the round-trip distance. From the junction, stay on Trillium Gap toward the falls. The route is well worn and mostly shaded, but roots, rocks, gentle inclines and stream crossings keep it from feeling like a paved stroll. There are several crossings, including small unbridged ones. After rain, high water can make them harder to cross, and the trail can turn muddy and slippery. Slow down where the path meets water rather than assuming each crossing will be dry.

The walk spends most of its time in a cool, damp cove forest. Rhododendron and old-growth trees line the trail, and eastern hemlocks are among the large trees described along this stretch. Small cascades and stream crossings break up the climb. This is a close-up forest walk rather than a ridge hike: the payoff is the wooded route and the waterfall, not a long-range mountain panorama.

The 25-foot waterfall drops into a rocky cove among mossy boulders. The trail passes behind the falling water, which is what makes this short walk different from a simple overlook. You can see the falls from the approach and from behind, but the rocks around the cove stay wet and slick. Take care around the edge and leave enough room for other hikers; this is a popular stop, and the falls area can feel busy.

Grotto Falls is the turnaround for this outing. Trillium Gap Trail continues beyond it toward Brushy Mountain and Mount Le Conte, so keep the distinction clear when planning: the 2.6-mile figure covers the walk from the Roaring Fork access to the falls and back, not the longer mountain route. If you want a waterfall walk, turn around at the falls rather than following the continuing trail.

Trillium Gap Trailhead is reached on the one-way Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, which closes seasonally in winter. Parking is limited and often fills; the park recommends considering a shuttle or another hike. A parking tag is required when you leave a vehicle for more than 15 minutes. The nearest listed pit toilets are at Rainbow Falls Trailhead, before the one-way loop. When the Roaring Fork road is closed, the park notes an alternate Trillium Gap approach from Rainbow Falls; it adds distance, so check the park map before choosing that start.
