Trillium Gap Trail to Mount Le Conte is a 13-mile out-and-back from Trillium Gap Trailhead, climbing through forest past Grotto Falls to Le Conte’s summit area. Allow about 8 to 10 hours; this is a steep, strenuous day rather than a longer version of the waterfall stroll. If you want the falls without the full climb, Grotto Falls alone is 2.6 miles round trip. The full hike suits people ready for a long ascent who also want time for the high-country viewpoints.

The start is on the one-way Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, a seasonal road that closes in winter. Check its schedule before driving out. Parking at Trillium Gap is limited and often fills early; the park suggests a shuttle. A parking tag is required if you leave a car for more than 15 minutes. The park lists the nearest restroom at Rainbow Falls Trailhead, before the one-way road, so use it rather than counting on a facility at Trillium Gap.

The lower trail climbs through forest over roots and rocks. About 1.5 miles in, 25-foot Grotto Falls spills over a rock ledge, and the path passes behind it. It’s the only waterfall in the park visitors can walk behind, which makes this a worthwhile short hike on its own. The falls draw a lot of traffic; beyond them, you leave most of the short-walk crowd and continue into a longer, quieter climb. Rocks around the cascade can be wet and slippery.

At nearly 3 miles, turn right at the Brushy Mountain Trail junction to continue toward Le Conte. The left branch climbs to Brushy Mountain’s summit, a separate viewpoint; it isn’t the route to Le Conte. From the junction, the trail keeps rising through forest. Expect a rocky tread, stairs, and bridges rather than an easy ridge walk.

Above Brushy Mountain, Trillium Gap also serves as the llama supply route for LeConte Lodge. Pack trains carry supplies up the mountain several times a week, so you may meet llamas on this stretch. Around 6.5 miles from the start, the trail reaches the lodge and the junction with Rainbow Falls Trail. The NPS 13-mile figure describes the out-and-back on Trillium Gap itself.

Near the upper end, follow the signs for Cliff Top and Myrtle Point; these are the best summit-area views. They’re short side walks off the main trail, so add time if you want both. Spring wildflowers are another reason this route draws hikers. No food or drinking-water service was confirmed along the trail, and the access road’s seasonal closure can change whether this is the right Le Conte route for your day.

Cold-weather footing and petsThe climb is steep and rocky, with stairs and bridges.

The climb is steep and rocky, with stairs and bridges. In cold weather, ice can cover the trail and icicles can fall from ledges; the park recommends microspikes in winter. Pets aren’t allowed on this trail.
