This listing covers the named upper path from Palikū Cabin into Kaupō Gap, then back the same way: about 6.8 miles round trip, with a 3.4-mile descent and the same climb on return. The mapped route drops roughly 2,570 feet from Palikū's 6,380-foot elevation. Allow five to seven hours for the steep, rugged ground and the climb back. This is a remote backcountry outing, not a short side walk.

A hard descent and returnThe path leaves the Palikū area and drops toward the drier lower slopes of the gap.

The path leaves the Palikū area and drops toward the drier lower slopes of the gap. Older route descriptions report steep stretches and short switchbacks; the park describes the Kaupō route as rugged and unimproved. Expect uneven footing and take the descent slowly: every foot down has to be climbed on the way back. Carry enough water for the whole outing; no dependable source was confirmed along this segment, and there are no food or supply services in the park.

The park's hiking map depicts a Kaupō path leaving Palikū, while its current hiking guidance says the named trail lies outside park boundaries and is not maintained. The lower continuation reaches unnamed ranch tracks, including sections marked private or no access, and current public passage was not verified. This entry maps only the 3.4-mile named upper path; turn back at its end and do not plan a coast-to-crater traverse without confirming permission and a legal exit.

Getting to the startPalikū Cabin has no road access or parking lot.

Palikū Cabin has no road access or parking lot. Reach it on foot through the crater trail system from a designated access such as Halemauʻu or Keoneheʻeheʻe (Sliding Sands); that approach is separate from the 6.8 miles above. A cabin stay has its own reservation requirements. Dogs are not allowed on park trails. The broad, green gap opening toward the coast is the route's defining view; keep the ridges in the frame to show its scale.
