More about Kūkamāhuākea Steam Vents and Wahinekapu

Pair steam with a caldera viewThe Kūkamāhuākea Steam Vents and Wahinekapu stop pairs a broad, steamy flat on Kīlauea’s summit…

The Kūkamāhuākea Steam Vents and Wahinekapu stop pairs a broad, steamy flat on Kīlauea’s summit with a bluff overlook across the caldera. It’s a good short stop if you want both geothermal steam and an open caldera view, though the vents can feel modest when little vapor is rising. The shared Steam Vents parking area has 34 stalls, and the Wahinekapu overlook is 500 feet from it.

Getting to the bluffThe stop is on Crater Rim Drive West, about a mile from the entrance station.

The stop is on Crater Rim Drive West, about a mile from the entrance station. The Wahinekapu path has concrete and packed gravel, with a gentle typical grade and a 6% maximum; loose gravel can still be an obstacle. From here you can follow Crater Rim Trail across the summit caldera or walk toward Haʻakulamanu (Sulphur Banks). Stay in designated open areas, follow signs, remain on trails, and keep back from cliff edges. Pets are allowed on roads and in parking lots, but not on overlooks or trails.

How the ground makes steamRainwater seeps down to rocks heated by magma and returns to the surface as steam.

Rainwater seeps down to rocks heated by magma and returns to the surface as steam. Kūkamāhuākea is the broad steaming flat between Haʻakulamanu and Wahinekapu. Its shallow cracks release steam; the deeper faults at nearby Haʻakulamanu can carry volcanic gases as well. Heat from the vents keeps deep-rooted trees from growing around the flat.

To many Native Hawaiians, the steam is a manifestation of Kū, one of Hawaiʻi’s four primary akua. Kū is associated with fishing, farming and canoe building, as well as strength and governance in warfare. That gives this geothermal stop a cultural story alongside the view and the geology.

Frame the steam and the calderaFor a photo, use a wide view that catches the steam field with the caldera rim beyond it.

For a photo, use a wide view that catches the steam field with the caldera rim beyond it. That shows both parts of the stop in one frame. The caldera view is still there when the vents are producing less visible steam.
