More about Kīpukapuaulu

A forest walk in a lava parkKīpukapuaulu is an easy 1.

Kīpukapuaulu is an easy 1.2-mile loop through an older native forest pocket surrounded by younger Mauna Loa lava. Its best payoff is close-up: trees, understory, birds, and a very different feel from the park’s exposed volcanic stops. Give it about 1 to 1½ hours if you want to follow the interpretive stops; choose it for forest and birdlife, not for a big crater view.

Find the trailheadThe parking area is 1.

The parking area is 1.5 miles up Mauna Loa Road from its Highway 11 junction; the trail starts across the road. The dirt path has gentle rises and dips, plus a few uneven, rocky patches, so easy does not mean smooth footing. Pit toilets are nearby at Kīpukapuaulu Picnic Area. The numbered stops make more sense with the illustrated trail guide.

Listen in the canopyLocals sometimes call this Bird Park.

Locals sometimes call this Bird Park. The trail guide names ʻelepaio, ʻapapane, and ʻamakihi, with the less common ʻiʻiwi as a possible sighting. Slow down and listen as well as looking into the branches. Birds are not guaranteed: visitors report everything from hearing calls without seeing birds to spotting several.

An island of older landKīpuka is the Hawaiian name for a patch of older vegetation left when younger lava flows…

Kīpuka is the Hawaiian name for a patch of older vegetation left when younger lava flows surround it. Here, the underlying lava is at least 8,600 years old, while a nearby flow is about 600. More than 10 feet of nutrient- and moisture-rich soil, shaped by eruptions and rainfall, supports plants associated with both wetter rainforest and drier woodland. Kīpukapuaulu has more native tree species per acre than any other forest in the park.

A forest brought backBy the late 1700s, cattle and feral goats had severely reduced native plant diversity.

By the late 1700s, cattle and feral goats had severely reduced native plant diversity. Botanist Joseph Rock documented rare trees here in 1913 and replanted hau kuahiwi, helping save it from extinction. Cattle were removed in 1928; goats and pigs were fenced out in 1968, and a dense, self-sustaining native understory returned. Later volunteer work has also targeted invasive vines that threaten native plants such as maile.

A Hawaiian cultural landscapeKīpukapuaulu lies in Wao Akua, a sacred realm in a Hawaiian system of seven spiritually…

Kīpukapuaulu lies in Wao Akua, a sacred realm in a Hawaiian system of seven spiritually significant zones, and in the ʻāina ʻili of Keauhou within the ahupuaʻa of Kapāpala. Its name reflects the setting: kīpuka for an island of older vegetation, pua for flower, and ulu for growing.
