Volcano House

Volcano House is a historic 33-room hotel at the edge of Kīlauea’s summit caldera. It combines overnight rooms with a restaurant, lounge and gift shop, so you can take in the volcano from indoors. It’s a worthwhile stop even if you aren’t staying overnight, but clouds and volcanic conditions can hide the view; don’t plan on seeing lava.

The Rim dining room and hotel common areas look toward Kīlauea caldera and Halemaʻumaʻu. The orange glow of the lava lake was visible from the dining room during episodes in 2008–2018 and 2020, but those were specific periods; the caldera view is the lasting reason to stop. At the low stone wall behind the hotel, include the ferns and the wide caldera in one photo, rather than filling the frame with crater alone.

The Rim is the full-service restaurant and highlights fresh-caught fish and grass-fed beef. Uncle George’s Lounge serves lighter fare and drinks. Food and service can be uneven, so I’d choose a meal here for the location first and keep expectations flexible.

Benjamin Pitman built the first thatched shelter here in 1846. Its guest register began a record of volcanic activity at the caldera, continued in later volumes. A larger thatched inn opened in 1866, and Mark Twain visited soon after. Isabella Bird and King Kalākaua also visited in the 1870s.

Carpenter William Lentz built a more permanent hotel in 1877, using native timber joined without nails and redwood shingles brought from California by mule. That earlier hotel building still stands across Crater Rim Drive as the Volcano Art Center Gallery.

A Victorian addition followed in 1891. A 1921 wing expanded capacity from 25 rooms to 104, but a kitchen fire destroyed the hotel in February 1940. Architect Charles W. Dickey designed the replacement, which opened in November 1941. That is the current building.
