Volcano Art Center Gallery is a small indoor gallery and shop in the 1877 Volcano House, the first western-style building on Kīlauea’s rim. It shows traditional and contemporary work by nearly 300 Hawaiʻi artists, from jewelry and glass to woodwork, painting, photography, clay, fiber, and mixed media. Drop in if you enjoy local art or want to browse for a locally made gift; the historic building adds a story even if you’re not shopping.

A thatched inn opened here in 1866, but as Kīlauea’s eruptions and lava lakes drew more visitors, it outgrew its rooms. William Lentz and his helpers built a larger hotel in 1877. They hand-hewed the ʻŌhiʻa and naio posts and rafters, while doors, windows, and other supplies came from Keauhou by horseback and two-wheeled carts.

The hotel grew again in 1891. In 1921, the 1877 section was detached and moved near its present location as a new wing went up. The newer hotel burned in 1940, but the older building survived. Volcano residents and artists restored it and held an art exhibition here in 1974, the beginning of Volcano Art Center.

The gallery is near Kīlauea Visitor Center inside the national park, so it works best as a short stop alongside nearby crater-rim sights. It’s a browse-and-shop visit rather than a long attraction, with everything from smaller gifts to higher-priced artwork.
