About Twin Gums Lookout

Why stop

  • Gum-framed Heysen Range view and shade for a short picnic.

Heads up

  • Trees screen part of the range, so it is not an open panorama.
Twin Gums Lookout is a small roadside viewpoint on Bunyeroo Road, part of the drive through Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. Two large gums frame a view toward the Heysen Range through the trees, and their shade makes this an easy place for a short picnic. It suits anyone already driving the gorge road; the stop is modest, with no separate hike to plan.

A named parking area adjoins the viewpoint, so this is a direct roadside stop. Bunyeroo Road is unsealed, with rough, rocky sections along the drive; rain can change the surface. Check current park road information before setting out. The outlook and the shaded tables are the main reasons to pull in.

“You're approaching Bunyeroo Gorge. Its walk follows a broad creek bed beneath gum trees and rugged rock, the same natural passage bullock teams once used to carry copper, mail and produce toward the western plains.”

Look through the treesThe best-known view is the layered range seen through the gums, not a wide-open panorama.

The best-known view is the layered range seen through the gums, not a wide-open panorama. Put a tree trunk near each edge of your photo and leave the ridge in the gap. Smaller trees partly screen the view, which gives the lookout its character but keeps the mountains from filling the scene. Two picnic tables make it easy to linger in the shade for a few minutes.
