Trail guide
Section 59 of the Heysen Trail is a 15 km point-to-point walk from Bunyeroo Valley to Trezona, usually around 4–5 hours on foot. It’s a half-day hike, not a short loop, so sort out a vehicle transfer or pickup at the Trezona end before you start. The best payoff comes on the early climb toward Yanyanna Hut: several vantage points look back across the Flinders Ranges, and that’s where I’d stop for the view.
After the climb, the route joins Yanyanna Track and spends a long stretch on broad dirt and vehicle tracks through native scrub. Expect rolling ground, dry creek beds, patches of river-gum shade, and open stretches that can feel like ground to cover between the climb and the finish. The trail passes old settlers’ huts before descending toward Brachina Gorge Road and crossing open fields into Trezona. The upper stretch is part of a long-distance route, so it’s more about settling into the landscape than ticking off a string of short stops. That final stretch is less dramatic, but Trezona sits in a geologically significant part of the ranges.
The official Bunyeroo start is on Bunyeroo Road; its published coordinates mark the section point, not a confirmed parking lot. Finish near Trezona campground and arrange transport between the ends. Access roads are unsealed, and park entry fees apply. There’s no confirmed water refill on the route, while several stretches are open and exposed. Don’t count on a campground water tank without checking it first. Dogs aren’t allowed in the national park, and walking trails close on Catastrophic Fire Danger days.
